Future ready transport

Free electric buses every 10 minutes

As incomes continue to rise, vehicle ownership is expected to increase, leading to greater traffic congestion, parking shortages, road safety concerns, and dependence on imported fossil fuels. To avoid becoming a car-dependent city, Addu will adopt a free electric bus service operating every 10 minutes during peak hours, supported by walking and cycling infrastructure and a planned transition to electric vehicles. Complemented by an expanding EV charging network, this strategy will lower transport emissions, reduce fuel imports, improve air quality, and establish Addu as a city for clean, affordable, inclusive and sustainable mobility.

Targets

  1. Target 2.1

    Operate free electric buses every 10 minutes during peak hours by 2028.

  2. Target 2.2

    Ensure 50% of motorcycles and cars used in Addu are electric vehicles by 2030.

  3. Target 2.3

    Ensure that 100% of homes with vehicle access provide at least one off-street car parking space within the property boundary.

  4. Target 2.4

    Develop 36 km of quality roads that meet international standard by 2028.
